Ammon Oler is a grade 10 student at Winston Churchill High School in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. He attended grade 9 and 10 classes in school and online during the COVID pandemic. Here are the experiences he shared with Palette under our Learning and Teaching During COVID series.

Ammon faced some technical issues when attending online classes:

“I couldn’t ask questions and get information as easily, and there are often problems with handing work in.” says Ammon. He was using Microsoft Teams, email and texting for online school.

Despite the negatives, there are always positives:

“Yes, because I could mostly determine my own study times, and choose where to work. I could still interact with friends and family, but in more controlled ways.”

The influence of the pandemic on Ammon’s life:

“Mentally, it was really hard. I couldn’t see friends in person, music lessons were a struggle, and performances & recitals were cancelled. This sucked for me because I don’t like working on something unless I know what the end goal is, and that goal was taken away. I wasn’t motivated to do anything.”
