The Struggles of Staying Focused During Online Classes

David Oler is a grade 12 student at Winston Churchill High School in Lethbridge, Canada. He attended grade 11 and 12 classes in school and online during the COVID pandemic. Here are the experiences he shared with Palette under our Learning and Teaching During COVID series.

These are some of the impracticalities he faced:

“Every teacher has a different method of doing things. At times, it was hard to stay focused and remember all my assignments. You couldn’t simply walk to the teacher to ask something (you had to type it in a chat and wait for a reply)”

On the flip side, David found that online classes helped improve his skills:

“I was able to work on time management and staying focused, and because I was at a computer, all my resources were where I needed them. There was a bit more organization with submitting things as well.”

The technology he used during the time includes:

“Laptop, cellphone, headphones”

There was also a major impact outside of school for David:

“I work less and less hours at my job. I can’t participate in fun things in the community. I can’t have friends over either. However, I was able to develop a better relationship with my family and be more self oriented.”
