Heat, humidity and rain were just some of the extreme weather highlights in August. Palette researches some of the most extreme statistics across the world.

Western U.S. drought and fires

According to Cnet, over 23 per cent of the Western U.S. was in the exceptional drought category. The US National Drought Monitor says this is the most extreme level of dryness.

Cnet also mentions that before this drought, Western U.S. has never had more than 12 per cent of the area under exceptional drought.

In addition, Cnet says that the US Forest Service will have all 18 of California’s national forests closed until Sept. 17 as more than 6,800 wildfires have burned 1.7 million acres in California since mid-July.

2021 Turkey floods

According to The Guardian, floods and mudslides struck Turkey’s Black Sea provinces. Yahoo!news says these storms occurred on Wednesday, Aug. 11. 

Agriculture and Forestry Minister, Bekir Pakdemirli, referred to the event as a disaster the area has not seen in 50 or 100 years.

According to Interior Minister, Suleyman Soylu, waters rose three or four metres high.

The Guardian also mentions that coincidentally, the flooding rains came as firefighters took care of fires to the south.

Greenland melting

According to the NASA Earth Observatory, summer heat triggered major Greenland melting, but unlike melting that occurred earlier in the summer, rainfall intensified the melt.

NASA’s Global Modeling and Assimilation Office’s glaciologist, Lauren Andrews, says that the August melting occurred more in southern Greenland. The earlier summer melting took place in northern Greenland.

Extreme Canada heat

According to CTV News Montreal, August 2021 was the hottest August on record in Montreal. The area’s monthly mean temperature was 23.6°C, which is 3.5°C higher than average. Numerous other Quebec locales recorded positive temperature departures ranging from 1.3°C above normal in Sept-Iles and 3.3°C above normal in Saguenay.

According to North Shore News, Vancouver tied 1998 and 1967 for its fifth warmest August on record at 19.1°C, compared to a normal of 18.0°C. Only 2017, 2004, 2014 and 2013 had warmer Augusts. Records there go back to 1896. 

According to CBC News, every Canadian capital, excluding Vancouver and St. John’s, had a higher number of 30°C+ days than usual this August. Toronto, for example, had an eight-day streak of 30°C+ weather from Aug. 19 to 26.

Tropical Storm Fred

According to The Weather Channel, Fred drenched much of the Caribbean from the Virgin Islands to Cuba. Fred hit the Virgin Islands on Tuesday, Aug. 10 and Cuba on Friday, Aug. 13

TWC also says that Fred flooded much of the Florida Panhandle on Monday, Aug. 16. For example, over seven inches of rain fell in Panama City, Florida.

In addition, TWC reports that shortly after Fred struck the Florida Panhandle, he brought over eight inches of rain in Helen, Georgia and Hilton Head, South Carolina. However, the most extreme statistic was that he dropped roughly 10 inches of rain near Black Mountain, North Carolina.

National Weather Service Eastern Region’s Twitter page confirms that 29 tornadoes touched down from Fred’s remnants. These tornadoes occurred in South Carolina (10), Georgia (8), Pennsylvania (5), North Carolina (3), Massachusetts (2), New Jersey (1) and Connecticut (1) between Aug. 16 and 19. These storms were all either EF0 or EF1 tornadoes.

Tropical Storm Henri

According to Bloomberg Green, Henri dropped nearly two inches of rain fell in Central Park, New York, in just one hour on Sunday, Aug. 22. The National Weather Service confirmed it was the area’s wettest hour on record.

According to Centraljersey.com, Tropical Storm Henri soaked Cranbury, New Jersey, with 8.91 inches of rain in two hours

Accuweather tweeted that 14.3 inches of rain fell in Concordia, New Jersey, on the night of Aug. 22.

CNN says that Great Gull Island, New York, reported a wind gust of 90 km/h (56 mph). Parts of Rhode Island also saw winds gust more than 50 mph.

Hurricane Ida

According to TWC, Hurricane Ida struck western Cuba on Friday, Aug. 27.

TWC reports that Ida made landfall in Port Fourchon, Louisiana, as a category 4 hurricane two days later before tracking northeastward as September started. Winds gusted up to 150 mph.

In addition, TWC says that New Orleans recorded 10 to 14 inches of rain.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Ida was the sixth costliest hurricane to strike the U.S. Only Irma (2017), Sandy (2012), Maria (2017), Harvey (2017) and Katrina (2005) were costlier hurricanes.

Northern Ontario tornadoes

According to Sault Online, four tornadoes struck Ontario’s Algoma region before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 11. Western University Northern Tornado Project investigators discovered that tornadoes struck Dunn’s Valley, Urquhart Lake, Kynoch and Blinko Lake. These storms were EF1 and EF2 tornadoes.
