Global warming is currently considered one of the major threats to the environment. It can be defined as an increase in the overall temperature of the earth since the pre-industrial period, mainly due to human activities. The industrial revolution took place in the late 18th century leading to a shift in modes of generating wealth. Massive industrialization has contributed to global warming as fossil fuels are used as a source of energy for running industries. These fossil fuels, when burnt, release greenhouse gases that trap the heat in the atmosphere, which contributes to global warming. Fossil fuels include crude oil, natural gas, and coal, whereas greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide.

Human activities are the leading cause of global warming, and the reason is that until the mid-18th century, the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was recorded at 280 ppm whereas, in contemporary times, the level of carbon dioxide has almost doubled, and is continuously rising at an alarming rate. A 1.5-degree Celsius increase in the overall temperature of the earth till the end of the twenty-first century is acceptable and manageable, but according to a report by the United Nations, the earth’s temperature is rising at such a quick rate that the world is unlikely to achieve this goal. According to experts, the earth’s temperature by the end of the twenty-first century might exceed 3 degree Celsius, which will create enormous problems for humanity.

The effects of global warming include a rise in sea levels, droughts, glacier retreats, a rise in the severity of extreme weather events, floods due to glacier melting, massive human displacement, and direct and indirect consequences on people and wildlife. Global warming and climate change are existential threats to humanity that require a multilateral approach. Countries with high industrial activity need to achieve energy efficiency and immediate transformation towards renewable energy resources. Major countries that are contributing massively to the release of greenhouse gases need to take serious measures to save life on earth.
